Description
Compound eye of a mosquito. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of numerous lenses making up the surface of a compound eye from an Asian tiger mosquito (Aedes albopictus). These lenses are called ommatidia. A compound eye is not very good at distinguishing detail, but it does enable the detection of tiny movements. The Asian tiger mosquito acts as a vector for the West Nile virus and the Dengue fever virus, which it transmits when it feeds on blood.
