Description
Rectum mucosa. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of the mucosa (lining) of the rectum. The mucosa is made up of many polygonal cells (red) covered in microvilli, tiny projections from the cell surface which greatly increase the surface area of the rectum. Debris (pink) and a white blood cell (yellow, at far left) are also seen. The rectum is the last section of the large intestine (colon) and runs into the anal canal. The upper mucosal layer is continually shed and replaced from the rectum. Faeces are stored in the rectum prior to defecation. Magnification unknown.
