Description
This is a portrait of a male Calliope (pronounced "Cal-O-Pea") hummingbird. This is a very special little bird as this particular bird is named "Clyde" and even has his own facebook page! I was signing t-shirts at the Rockport Fulton Hummingbird Festival recently (I was lucky enough to have my work selected again this year for the 2015 t-shirt art) and met a couple of ladies who told me all about "Clyde". I had been thinking about doing a portrait of one of these little birds and Clyde was the perfect candidate! With his permission, of course, I did a portrait using his several fabulous photos on his facebook page. He is like a tiny little movie star!
According to Wikipedia: "The calliope hummingbird (Selasphorus calliope) is a very small hummingbird native to the United States and Canada and, during winter, Central America. It was previously considered the only member of the genus Stellula, but recent evidence suggests placement in the genus Selasphorus.[2] This bird was named after the Greek muse Calliope. The genus name means "little star".
Clyde really does live up to his name and truly is a "little star" - and little is an understatement as they are the smallest breeding bird found in Canada and the United States!
The original work is pen and ink with watercolor pencil on 140 lb. watercolor bond and is approximately 9"x6". The original is hanging currently in the members' gallery at the Rockport Center for the Arts. If you happen to be in Rockport anywhere near the harbor, please stop by the gallery and take a look!

Thanks so much for looking and hope you like "Clyde"!
