Description
Chlamydia bacterium. Computer artwork of the non-replicating infectious form of the bacterium Chlamydia trachomatis, known as an elementary body (EB). The EB is surrounded by a cell envelope (green) covered in protein spikes (gold) that inject material into the host cells. At upper left is the DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid) core, which contains the bacterium's genetic material. Also seen are ribosomes (red), the site of protein synthesis. Chlamydia is a sexually transmitted infection that can go undetected causing infertility. It also causes the eye disease trachoma, which can lead to blindness.
