Description
Most Haitian children in rural areas walk to school for hours. They arrive to school tired, hungry, and disinclined to learn. Others will conveniently stay home, or drop out of primary school. Another aspect is if the parents are illiterate, their children tend to be illiterate too.
Today, the classrooms are overcrowded, especially after the January 12, 2010's Earthquake. Only 1 in 4 children has a place to sit. Less than 1/2 the children have access to textbooks and the majority of teachers are not trained.
The UNPD (the United Nation Development Program) is an executive board within the United Nations general assembly. It was established on November 22, 1965. Its headquarters is in NYC, USA. It operates in 179 countries. It is funded entirely by voluntary contributions from member nations. UNDP works with local government to meet development challenges and develop local capacity.
According to the United Nation Development Program (UNDP), in a study conducted in 2009, out of 179 countries, Haiti rank 154 with a literacy rate of 62.1%. That means 37.8% of Haitians are illiterate.
UNESCO (the United Nation Educational Scientific and Cultural Organization) is a specific agency of the United Nations. UNESCO has its headquarters in Paris. The organization has 50 field offices around the world. UNESCO has 196 members. Its focal point is education, natural sciences, social and human sciences, culture, communication, and information. The international intellectual co-operation can be traced since 1922. UNESCO has many predecessor organizations with many different names:
1. ICIC (International Committee on Intellectual Co-operation)-in 1922
2. IIIC( The International Institute for Intellectual Cooperation)-in 1925
3. IBE (the International Bureau of Education)-in 1925
4. CAME (Conference of Allied Ministers of Education).-in 1942
5. UNESCO-in 1945
UNESCO keeps track of literacy statistics. UNESCO corroborates the UNDPs study. According to UNESCO, "The least literate nation in Latin America and the Caribbean is Haiti, with an estimated 62.1% literacy rate."
The government needs to invest in proximity schools, better educational facilities, and teacher-training programs. The government should invest in free primary education. Education should be mandatory.
Children have a right to basic education. Children are the future. Only education will guarantee a strong nation. Literacy is a citizen right. The citizens in a Democratic country need that tool to be able to judge, choose, and elect their statesmen.
