Description
The "Child Eater Fountain" or Kindlifresserbrunnen was created in 1545-46 by Hans Gieng and placed in the Old City of Bern, Switzerland. The statue depicts an Ogre devouring children. There are various theories as to its meaning, with one theory tying it to the common local folklore of the Krampus, a beast-like creature associated with Christmas and Saint Nicholas. Krampus is depicted as the alter ego of Santa, and represents the evil and punishment that will come to children that have been naughty.
