Description
Have done so many paintings of Chapel of the Holy Cross or Red Rock Chapel as it is called by many, could almost do it with my eyes closed... 8=) This was painted with Acrylic on Masonite...
From "uptown" Sedona, take 179 south toward the Village of Oak Creek. Turn left on Chapel Road or right if coming from I-17.... The Chapel of the Holy Cross is at the end of Chapel Road. From the parking area there is a steep climb up the ramp to the Chapel, but the ramp is wide enough for a wheel chair.
The Church is designated as a Non-Denominational Church. It is the only church ever built in a National Park. It took an act of Congress to get permission, the architect was a student of Frank Lloyd Wright's.
The entrance which is not visible, is by a road which curves around behind the rocks and church to a parking lot in the rear.
More than half a century after its construction, the Chapel of the Holy Cross continues to be a place of wonder, spiritual renewal, and sublime vistas for all who come to Sedona.
This spiritual citadel on a hill is one of the "must see" sights of Sedona. One of Sedona's earliest landmarks is also one of its most endearing the Chapel of the Holy Cross, where people of all denominations come to offer their prayers, supplications, and praises--and to marvel at the building's distinctive architecture and the panoramic vistas from its site.
Even after half a century, the chapel has a contemporary, almost out-of-time look, a sculptural feel, and a surreal effect as it juts out of two red mounds on a spur of rock that is 200 feet above the ground.
The chapel's most prominent feature is a cross that seems to have been wedged into the rock by some devout pilgrim, who later built a chapel around it. It is an unforgettable sight from all angles. Looking at it directly, it seems the rocks parted to embrace the structure. From the side, it looks like it was dropped into place; from above, it resembles a diving board or runway where one might leap towards spirit.
Inside, the chapel is intimate and unadorned. On the periphery, benches hug the angular walls. In the center, two rows of pews--seven on each side--provide a place to pray or rest. The feeling in the chapel is uplifting. Wherever one sits, the eye is drawn to the cross in the center and to the floor-to-ceiling windows behind it, which provide a magnificent backdrop.
The Red Rock Secret Mountain Wilderness is one of our favorite areas for Photos and Paintings. We can drive about 25 miles into the wilderness in different areas, but where the roads dead end, no vehicles are allowed. There are many hiking trails from various areas of the road including the end. Wilderness camping, fishing, etc is allowed, for 40-50 miles in the wilderness..

The Red Rock-Secret Mountain Wilderness is a 47,194-acre wilderness area located within the Coconino National Forest in the U.S. state of Arizona.

The Wilderness is predominantly wind and water sculpted pinnacles, windows, arches, and slot canyons, and the red-rock cliffs of the Mogollon Rim that mark the edge of the Colorado Plateau. Bordered on the east by Sycamore Canyon Wilderness, the high mesas of Secret Mountain and Wilson Mountain jut out into the lower country and streams and creeks from the canyons drain into Oak Creek canyon and the Verde River.

We really appreciate you stopping by to view our work. #Paintings or #Photographs of #beautiful things, especially those in #nature can help you feel better. Just stop and take a few moments to see all the details. Even click on the image to see the finest detail, like brush strokes, etc.. It could even surprise you, just how relaxed you can feel after viewing 100 or more images (just try it today) when you take the time for a break.... View or scan them carefully noticing details you would not have otherwise seen, and take the time to see many images in that manner. Just clicking Next at the top of the page, again, and again as you breathe slowly.... Breathing slowly as you watch the next page loading, can even be a form of meditation or relaxation, as you think of the scene or landscaps, just as if you are actually in that environment. And when you take ten minutes or so to observe and pay attention to how you are feeling.... We know you will enjoy our work, even more.... You can just return whenever you feel like you can use a break... to enjoy them, again and again...

Normally paint the huge mountain behind the Chapel. But used Artistic license and left it out so the Chapel Dominates.

Interesting structure, so is the big house across the street. This church is difficult to photograph well. Nice job!

The house across the street with the Observatory belongs to Nicolas Cage.... Id love to live there. :)
