Description
The Cathedral of Saint John the Evangelist, in downtown Lafayette, LA., was completed in l916, and is on the National Registry of Historic Properties. It is the third church built on the site donated by Jean Mouton in l821, when Lafayette was then called Vermilionville.
Adjacent to the Cathedral is the St. John Cemetery. Located there are the tombs of Jean Mouton and his son Alexandre Mouton, who was governor of Louisiana from l843 to l846. Also next to the Cathedral is the ancient, majestic St. John Oak Tree. At nearly 5 centuries old, the mammoth oak measures over 28 feet in circumference and stands approximately 126 feet high and 210 feet across.
