Description
This painting was done from a photograph I took while we were riding through the wash in the canyon in a huge wagon pulled by a large tractor .No one is allowed into the canyon unsupervised. Navajo guides provide various tours of the canyonlands, including - at that time at least a horse back tour complete with an overnight camp out..The tour afforded us beautiful views of the canyon,Spider Rock, and even a sweat lodge that could be scene off in a clearing .
Canyon de Chelly is a comparatively little known canyon in the northeast of Arizona. It is not as spectacular as other canyons in Arizona and Utah, but has some amazing views, sheer sandstone walls that rise up to 1000 feet, some wonderfully preserved Anasazi ruins, and several scenic overlooks. Aside from First,Second and Third Mesas which are Hopi land, the major portion of the far northern corner of Arizona is Navajo land, including the town of Chinle which is the largest in the area and is the gateway to Canyon de Chelly National Monument. Canyon de Chelly gives us a fascinating insight into the life of present day Navajo, who still inhabit it - rearing sheep and goats and cultivating crops .The floor of the canyon is green and fertile year round.Along with the protection which the rocky walls provide and the beauty of the landscape, one can understand why the valley or canyon has been inhabited for such a long time - from the primitive indigenous peoples of 2,000 years ago, through the Anasazi civilization in twelfth century which extended throughout a large area of the Southwest before it suddenly disappeared, to the Navajo people who live there now and have for the past 300 years.
