Description
Cancer cells. Immunofluorescence light micrograph of melanoma (skin cancer, green) and astrocytoma (brain cancer, red) cells grown in culture. The imaging technique of immunofluorescence has shown different parts of the cells in different colours. The DNA in the nucleus of each cell is blue. The other cell parts are green for the melanoma cells and red for the astrocytoma cells. Cancer cells divide rapidly and chaotically, leading to a disorganised appearance. Astrocytoma cells arise from glial cells, a type of supportive tissue in the brain. Melanoma cells are an aggressive form of skin cancer. Second place, 1991 Nikon Small World Competition.
