One thing you can't help but run across in Seoul are shops selling brushes for calligraphy. There are all kinds of brushes with different color bristles, and with different shaped tips. Most dramatic of all are the sizes, from the smallest fine topped brush to absolutely gigantic brushes that are a couple of feet long. It's a treat for the eye to see the displays. The calligraphic tradition of East Asia originated and developed from China. There is a general standardization of the various styles of calligraphy in this tradition. Chinese characters were introduced to Korea as early as the 2nd or 3rd century AD, probably with the spread of Buddhism. Admiration for Tang Dynasty culture, including Chinese calligraphy, grew. As in many other cultural aspects, styles change over time. Currently, nationalist sentiment has led to the popularization of the native hangul alphabet, and calligraphic works using hangul have since seen a revival.
