Description
Puccini's opera is the best-known treatment of this fairy tale about a competition for the hand of a princess named Turandot who executes all losers, but encounters a suitor who thinks outside the box, and the results are dramatic. It is an old story, originally told by the medieval Persian poet Nizami Ganjavi. But, rather than seeing Turandot as an incomprehensible monster, I chose to represent her as a wounded part of the spirit, reacting as Eros did to Psyche in the ancient Greek myth. This image represents the emotions of both people as a bewildered Calaf (who eventually wins) tries to reach Turandot. Its decorative aspect is more obvious than its disturbing theme.
