Description
If you climb Gellert Hill in Budapest you get a view of the rear of Buda Castle. From the front you get a view of the impressive 1000' facade looming over the Danube River. What is striking about this view is how integrated this massive structure is into the surrounding neighborhoods. It is the historical castle and palace complex of the Hungarian kings in Budapest and was first completed in 1265.. Buda Castle has been destroyed and rebuilt several times in its lifetime, the last time after the destruction in the Seige of Budapest in WWII. Today, the main structure of the Buda Castle is rather austere compared to its predecessors; the interior in particular is completely devoid of ornamentation and none the magnificent royal apartments have been reconstructed. But despite its lack of authenticity, the Buda Castle is still an imposing complex. Currently it is home to several museums, including the National Gallery and Budapest History Museum. It is also part of the Budapest World Heritage Site, which includes many of the bridges and historic buildings lining the Danube River in Budapest Hungary. Buda Castle is part of a UNESCO World Heritage site in Budapest Hungary.
