Blood plasma transfusion, World War II. US soldiers and medics attending a wounded soldier who is being given a blood plasma transfusion. Blood plasma is the liquid part of blood in which the blood cells are held in suspension. Blood plasma transfusions were first proposed towards the end of World War I. By World War II, dried plasma that could be turned into plasma by the addition of distilled water was in use by the US Army. Photographed between 1942 and 1945, at a portable field hospital in New Guinea.
