Description
A dear friend recently asked about this painting. I did it several years ago. It is mostly watercolor but I did use acrylic to darken the background. It is painted on heavy watercolor paper. When I first moved to Florida, I was fascinated by these beautiful flowers. I had never noticed them before moving here. They are relatively common in this state. In fact, I now have one in my own backyard. It grows next to my banana trees. They are especially enchanting when they are backlit, as is this one. When the sun sets behind them; they glow.
I found the following information on Wikipedia.
Strelitzia is a genus of five species of perennial plants, native to South Africa. It belongs to the plant family Strelitziaceae. The genus is named after the duchy of Mecklenburg-Strelitz, birth place of the Queen Charlotte of the United Kingdom. A common name of the genus is bird of paradise flower. This is because of a supposed resemblance of its flowers to the bird of paradise. In South Africa, it is commonly known as a crane flower. It is featured on the reverse of the 50 cent coin.
The leaves are large, similar to a banana leaf in appearance but with longer petiole. They are arranged strictly in two ranks to form a fan-like crown of evergreen foliage. The flowers are produced in a horizontal inflorescence emerging from a stout spathe. They are pollinated by sunbirds, which use the spate as a perch when visiting the flowers. The weight of the bird when standing on the spathe opens it to release the pollen onto the bird's feet. This is then deposited on the next flower it visits.

I have a tendency to anthropomorphize many things, but it is delightfully easy with the Bird of Paradise! Your beauty has a delightfully attentive stance that makes me smile AnnaJoe!
