Description
Bharathanatyam is a classical dance form that has originated in the southern state of Tamil Nadu in India.
The word Bha-ra-tha-natyam combines "Bhavam" meaning expression, "ragam" meaning music, "thalam" meaning rhythm and "natyam" meaning dance. The dance is known for its grace and expression.
Here, a young dancer (a friend's daughter) is performing her "Arangetram". Arangetram is the debut on-stage performance of a classical dance student, after undertaking years of training.

I have always loved the beauty and elegance of Indian art of classical dance, it is a rare treat to view it here in my country, thank you Uma for choosing this subject and sharing it with us here, the way you painted it is just marvellous!
Uma Krishnamoorthy replied:
Thank you Anna. I am glad that you love the classical dances of India. An interesting fact about some of these dances is that they represent the elements of nature. For instance, Bharathanatyam represents the element of fire, Odissi - the element of water, Kuchipudi - earth and Mohiniattam - air. The movements of a Bharathanatyam dancer resemble the movements of a dancing flame.
