Description
This image is of one of my male Betta splendens. With the help of digital magic, he looks like he is swimming around in a fancy Betta bowl orb but he's actually the overseer of a 30-gallon freshwater aquarium that's home to some mystery snails.
Although Betta fish are usually purchased in tiny plastic cups and marketing suggests they should be kept in a small Betta bowl, these fish need a tank of a bare minimum of one gallon and five gallons is ideal in the small container category. There is no aquarium that is too large for a Betta, the only concern being "Betta friendly" inhabitants because many fish will nip fins and harass or injure Bettas. An interesting fact is that Bettas have a labyrinth organ that allows them to take in air at the surface when their water's oxygen has been depleted.
Selective breeding has garnered Betta the title " Jewel of the Orient" and that is a fitting name for this beautiful species. Their bodies are approximately two inches long at adulthood. Female Bettas are smaller and less colorful than the males. Bettas can live 2 - 4 years in captivity with optimal care. The body colors and fin styles is quite different from the original dull-colored fish found in shallow stagnant ponds in southern Southeast Asia.
This beautiful Betta splendens has the Half Moon tail type which looks spectacular when he's flared. A Betta will become aggressive and flare to make himself look bigger at a perceived threat. If he sees his reflection in a mirror, he will flare, and will keep flaring because his opponent in the mirror is flaring too. The male Betta splendens is an interesting, inquisitive, beautiful creature that is extremely easy to care for as long as his few essential needs are met.
