Description
"Beloved Meows" is an original memorial design on sustainable papyrus based on Ancient Egyptian funerary wishes for the dead, rendered in safe, modern replacements for period pigments such as lead antimonite and chrysocolla. The wish from the pet's guardian reads, "May your soul live on for millions of years, resting in a sun-puddle with a full belly, facing the north wind with your eyes beholding happiness." The procession of cats in the style of the Museum of London's "Animals Acting like People" are The Cat Who Protects, The Lucky Cat, The Happy Cat, and The Funny Cat (The Cat Who Distracts the Heart). Anpu/Anubis and Bast/Bastet are greeting the new arrivals with a feast and a basket of toys.
"Meow" is approximately how the Egyptian word for "cat" is pronounced, hence the title. Much of the wish text is taken from King Tutankhamen's Wishing Cup and the rest is an original translation specific to the loss of a pet. Ancient Egyptians believed their loved ones went to the afterlife in a boat rather than over a Rainbow Bridge, but a rainbow is suggested in the decoration of the barque without compromising the symbolism and limitations of Egyptian paint colors.
