Description
The Beguinages. A feature of the Low Countries, these communities were founded in the 13th century as sanctuaries for the many women (beguines) left single or widowed by the Crusades. Although deeply pious, a beguinage or begijnhof was not a convent, the beguines could leave to marry.
The begijns were religious women who accepted vows of chastity and obedience but drew the line at poverty, preferring to earn a living by looking after the sick and making lace. They provided an option for women to live without a husband and children without becoming a nun -- there was little way of alternative at that time.
A beautiful and spiritual place to spend some time, if you happen to find yourself in Bruges, Belgium.
