Description
Black bears locate or excavate dens on 20 degrees - 40 slopes with
northerly aspects between 5,800-8,599 feet in elevation in Yellowstone national park.
American black bears typically avoid confronting humans when possible, however violent interactions resulting in the deaths of black
bears have been recorded in Yellowstone National Park.
Black bears tend to excavate dens, den under windfalls,in hollow trees or caves, and in previously occupied dens.
Movement to dens is correlated to weather and snow conditions with most movement usually occurring from late October to mid November.
Hibernation is varied by as much as one month depending on weather conditions.
The (North) American black bear (Ursus americanus) is a medium-sized bear native to North America. Binomial name Ursus americanus
Approximately 70% of all black bears are black, though only 50% of black bears in the Rocky Mountains are black. Many black bears
in Northwestern North America are cinnamon, blond or light brown in color, and thus may sometimes be mistaken for grizzly bears.
Hibernation is an adaptation to a seasonal shortage of food, low environmental temperatures, and snow cover on the ground.
Hibernation in black bears typically lasts 3 to 5 months. The denning period in Yellowstone National Park is approximately 5 months.
During winter, black bears consume 25 to 40% of their body weight. Their footpads peel off while they sleep, making room for new tissue.
