Description
Astronaut on the Moon, computer artwork. The Earth is seen in the background, and the astronaut is standing in the sunlight of a lunar day. Humans on the Moon require protective suits because the Moon has no atmosphere and a wide range of surface temperatures from -170 (night) to 127 (day) degrees Celsius. The lunar day-and-night cycle is nearly 30 Earth-days long. The Moon has a gravity that is about a sixth of that of the Earth. The Moon is about 384,000 kilometres from Earth. Men landed on the Moon in 1969, with the last mission taking place in 1972. Since then, no astronauts have returned to the Moon, though there are plans for manned lunar missions during the 21st century.
