Stomach ulcer. Artwork showing a stomach (gastric) ulcer (dark red). Also known as a peptic ulcer, it may appear dark red due to clotted blood, with swelling around it. An ulcer is a disruption of the lining of the stomach caused by digestion of the mucosa (lining membrane) by acid, pepsin and bile. Causes of gastric ulcers are related to diet, alcohol consumption, stress and certain drugs. The bacterium Helicobacter pylori has also been associated with stomach ulcer formation. Bleeding, perforation and obstruction due to scarring may occur as complications. Symptoms are alleviated by antacid medicines; severe cases may require stomach surgery.
