Description
This was a drawing done by me which I originally called Artemis. She is a woman drawn purely from my imagination, but she has also been for me a symbol of feminine power, individuality and strength.
The goddess Artemis represented many things in Greek mythology and from a Jungian perspective she represented a powerful androgynous feminine archetypal energy. A woman who could embrace and express both the masculine and the feminine and who is symbolic of the feminine that struggles today in the world we live in to be recognised, respected and allowed.
In mythology the story goes: "In the classical period of Greek mythology, Artemis was often described as the daughter of Zeus and Leto, and the twin sister of Apollo. She was the Hellenic goddess of the hunt, wild animals, wilderness, childbirth, virginity and protector of young girls, bringing and relieving disease in women; she often was depicted as a huntress carrying a bow and arrows.[6] The deer and the cypress were sacred to her. In later Hellenistic times, she even assumed the ancient role of Eileithyia in aiding childbirth."
I drew this a long time ago and remember the feelings that drew me into this expression of feminine beauty. These days as I look upon her, I'm reminded of the Mona Lisa and the mysterious beauty that these women share along with many other women in art. And I question WHO because I know on a deeper level they will always remain a mystery, a mystery that belongs to possibly another dimension that draws us in through these artistic expressions and makes us question as well as remember.
This was originally a drawing to which I have added digital colourings and textures. The colors and vintage digital effects add an old or antique like feeling and look to this image and seems appropriate given the age of the myth of Artemis.
The feminine is a timeless expression and energy that must be honoured and remembered as we seek to find balance and healing for the world we live in.
