View of part of Africa and the Arabian Peninsula, seen from Apollo 17. Astronaut Eugene Cernan took this picture as Apollo 17 headed out toward the Moon in December 1972. Cernan was the mission commander for this, the final flight in the Apollo Moon programme. Apollo 17 was launched on 7 December 1972. Cernan and Harrison Schmitt stayed on the Moon for 75 hours, whilst Ronald Evans manned the orbiting command module. The mission, and the manned exploration of the Moon in the Apollo programme, ended with a splashdown on 19 December 1972.
