Description
One of the earliest maps to show the proposed city of Washington in the District of Columbia. Andrew Ellicott was in charge of surveying the land set aside for the District and city, and made several modifications to L'Enfant's original plan for the new capital. The map shows the street layout, with wide diagonal streets named after the states overlaid on a regular grid pattern. The Capitol building, Mall, and President's House are indicated, and explanatory notes are included in the lower corners describing the layout of the streets and details of surveying. Original title: Plan of the City of Washington in the Territory of Columbia, ceded by the States of Virginia and Maryland to the United States of America, and by them established as the Seat of their Government, after the Year MDCCC
