Description
A map of the world by French mathematician Oronce Fine using a double cordiform (heart-shaped) projection, showing the northern hemisphere on the left side and the southern hemisphere on the right. The map clearly shows the early belief that the lands discovered in the new world were part of Asia, as North, Central, and South America are shown as extensions of the eastern edge of Asia. The Gulf of Mexico and the West Indies are clearly shown, and the peninsula of Florida is named. This map was frequently copied by other mapmakers, including Gerard Mercator.
