Allegory On Russia
Vladimir A Shvartsman
Painting - Oil On Canvas
The sun is setting, not only on the surroundings, but also on the Soviet Union itself. Glorious colors were combined to create an almost blood-red sunset. The sun's rays are reflected from the top of the pile of fish heads. It is a very startling sight. The lone tree in the background symbolizes the barrenness of the Russian landscape, as it will appear in the future. The vast number of decapitated heads and the blood flowing to the lower right-hand corner of the painting force us to recall the many millions who have died throughout Russia's turbulent history. This seemingly innocent painting is meant to represent a very sinister set of circumstances. The colors used are meant to lead viewers to respond to this work, first because of the spectrum of colors, but then to search for the true meaning behind it.
