Description:
The Oregon state motto, “She Flies With Her Own Wings” phrase was written by Judge Jessie Quinn Thornton and translated into Latin for the territorial seal in 1854. “Alis Volat Propiis” is the Latin translation.
This is my interpretation. It focuses on the spectacular view from the famous “Lewis and Clark” trail. (They discovered Oregon in 1805) The trail is overlooking what is now Cannon Beach. Some of the signature rocks are seen in the background. While I was re-reading the facts of Lewis and Clark’s trek, which was over three years; the difficulties they encountered their persistence and commitment to their quest rang loud and clear. I believe that their spirit or vision is part of the foundation of strength and beauty that Oregon still embraces as one of her own.
There is symbolism in my work which focuses on the
“dove” or our peace, beauty and our freedom. Look closely to see the spirit of Lewis and Clark themselves. In this piece the twist is you get to visually Imagine what it would be like to see this breathtaking view from their perspective; just imagine seeing this country the way it was first viewed! Taking in it’s lush beauty and envisioning new possibilities…through the lens of a telescope. I even replicated the actual map they used if you look carefully at the background.
I brought together what I felt portrayed Oregon’s motto… Beauty, Independence and Strength. Enjoy!
