Description
Waco is all the rage thanks to a resurgent Baylor football program and the hit HGTV show "Fixer Upper." The city's iconic landmarks are featured regularly in TV spots. Standing tall among Waco's iconic landmarks is the historic ALICO Building.
After a long drive from my home in Illinois to school at Baylor University the red neon ALICO sign on the horizon was a welcome sight . The iconic 22-story ALICO Building, with its roof-top red neon letters, dominates the Waco skyline. Opened in 1911, the headquarters of the Amicable Life Insurance Company--ALICO for short--claimed bragging rights as the tallest building west of the Mississippi River. The Beaux Arts style skyscraper--designed by Sanguinet & Staats Architects--took one year to build at a cost of $755,000. The ALICO Building enjoyed its own water supply for several decades from an artesian well discovered during excavation of the foundation--a wonder chronicled in a 1930s "Ripley's Believe It or Not" article. Waco's Old Corner Drugstore, birthplace of Dr. Pepper in 1885, moved into the new skyscraper's first floor. The 10 million pound structure survived a direct hit from the 1953 tornado that devastated downtown Waco. The building swayed several feet, but the steel structure held fast in the heavy winds.
This fine art photographic image is the perfect home or office wall compliment for those who love Waco.
