Description
Granada is a sunsplashed place, far south in Spain. The houses are whitewashed and the roofs are red. It's blindingly bright! This is the view of the Albayzin district of the city, the traditional Moorish district, viewed from the Alhambra. The Alhambra sits on top of a hill high above the River Darro valley, while the Albayzin sits on a hill opposite. In the Albayzin, there is the famed San Nicolas viewpoint at which people gather nightly to view the Alhambra light up as the sun goes down. You can see the viewpoint on the left side of the picture, under the tower and green trees. So the people at the Alhambra are looking over at them and they are looking back at us! Much of the significance of the Albayzin lies in the medieval town plan with its narrow streets and small squares and in the relatively modest houses in Moorish and Andalusian style that line them. These areas survived the urbanization that occurred in the lower town center of Granada, and today form part of the UNESCO World Heritage area of the city, together with the Alhambra.
