African flamingos group in water at sunset - Oil on canvas painting by Tal Alperovitch

Flamingos are very social birds; they live in colonies whose population can number in the thousands. These large colonies are believed to serve three purposes for the flamingos: avoiding predators, maximizing food intake, and using scarce suitable nesting sites more efficiently.
That distinctive pink color of flamingos comes from the food they eat: algae and shrimp that contain carotenoid pigments (the same stuff that makes carrots orange), and which produce a red pigment when broken down during digestion.

I love painting these amazing birds, their colors and elegance never cease to amaze me!
