Description
Abbey Street gets its name from the Franciscan Friary at the bottom of the the Street. The name Ennis Inis (Island) comes from the short for Inis Cluain Ramh Fhada ("island of the long rowing meadow"). In the 12th century the OBriens Kings of Munster set up residence on the Clonroad. They granted the Franciscans permission to build a Friary. Over the years it became a hive of industry out of which the town of Ennis grew.
