Founded by the Benedictines in the 11th century and rebuilt numerous times through the centuries, Melk Abbey looms over the Danube River and the town of Melk, Austria. Its Baroque architecture dates from the early 1700s. In this image is a small sampling of its ornate exterior and beautifully landscaped grounds. Some of the more than 900 students (co-ed) who attend secondary school at Melk Abbey can be seen walking across this courtyard (the Forecourt).
