According to a Native legend, a cardinal flying towards the sun is a sign of good luck.
Cardinals are named after the Cardinals of the Roman Catholic Church because their red feathers resemble the bright red of the Cardinals robes.
Cardinals are associated with the number 12 because they are year round residents and because their eggs hatch in 12 days. Their strongest characteristic aside from their bright red color,is their loud, almost metallic sounding whistle. Both the male and female cardinals whistle in this manner, this is seen as reflecting the need to integrate both male and female characteristics into our daily lives. The male energy is perserverance and the females, intuition. If both are balanced and functional in our lives, then our intuitive knowledge can become strong enough to manifest our dreams.
The Northern Cardinal, from the family Cardinalidae, are also referred to as cardinal buntings and cardinal-grosbeaks.They are seed eating,long-tailed song birds with strong beaks. The male is a bright red and the female a tawny brown with red tinges on her wings, tail and crest. Both the male and female have red/orange beaks and a black mask around the beak and eyes. They are often seen in pairs, and are a common sight at bird feeders. If not seen at feeding stations, look for them in low shrubs and trees ,or foraging for food near or on the ground.Cardinals like to nest in dense shrubs and vines. They are a common sight in parks, backyards , and a joy when seen on a cold winter day!
