Scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of Trichomonas vaginalis, the human parasitic flagellate that causes the sexually transmitted disease trichomoniasis. This pear-shaped organism infects the genital and urinary tract of both sexes. While men experience few symptoms, women may have painful inflammation of the vagina (vaginitis) and a foul-smelling discharge. Sexual intercourse in the most common form of transmission of this disease.
