Description
The Sail Training Ship Gorch Fock is by far the most famous ship in Germany. Especially when the currency in Germany was the Deutsche Mark, every child knew the Gorch Fock, because it was printed at the back of the 10 DM bill, before it was replaced by new DM notes in 1995. What most people - even in Germany - do not know: today there are 2 ships, which share the name Gorch Fock. Both of them do not only share the name, but also an exciting history. The Gorch Fock 1, which shows my photograph, was build 1932-1933, 1945 it was sunk purposely, and in 1947 salvaged by the Russians. Till 1991, renamed in Towarishtsh, the Gorch Fock 1 served as sail training vessel in the Sowiet Union, and sailed until 1993 under Ukrainian flag. 2003, the Gorch Fock 1 returned back to its hailing port Stralsund. The sister ship still is in service as sail training ship in the German Navy.
