Description
"Sbiah Baah" is the one of traditional festival among Maibrat People in Papua. This festival occurred in the 60's, when I was a child. At that time we were not familiar with modern technology such as cameras. Such festivals have gone along with the loss of our forefathers. But the characteristics of the cultural life is not lost. This has turned into a modern life of our generation. There are seven traditional institutions in Maybrat and Sawiat society:
1. WION - religion charge and the initiation institution of men
2. FENYA KIAR is an initiation institution for women
3. BOSI ANYA = Marriage institution
4. SIRA TABAM = Landlords institution
5. BOVEN = cultural institution
6. BOKAH MESIA BOSA MEYA = Economic and trade institutions
7. BOMEY = language institutions
Among these seven institutions there are two institutions that connected to Sbiah Baah festival, that's Marriage (Bosi Anya) and Trade (Bosa Meya) institutions. Sbiah baah is a home to control and settlement of Debts and Receivables of Kain Timor( Wove clothes from Timor used as dowry), which originated from the stock (rura) planted by women This is to equip and raise up the dignity of their daughters, after dowry provision (stock - rura) was accomplished by man party. , give back down payment ( deposit = bomasu=pokok), dividend (bour- bunga), bonus ( bo amot), and grant ( bofnesaran = hibah). this is a formation system of spider web that have been taking place in Maybrat society until now even to our new generation! AS you see into this work, various kinds of colorful woven cloth wrapped around girls body. Such wove clothes made in Timor and used for years as dowry among the native people that inhabited the Bird Head peninsula of West Papua. . The girls were running out of the house, chasing and holding the men hands while dancing around that big house. Women with their traditional bag ( made of bark) full with Kain Timor inside it , walking in front of, followed by men with shouting and running around about to cutting the wood that plugged by the host, as if to prove and demonstrate their ability that they are be able to pay their debt. Thanks to God that He has given me the ability to record this kind of tradition event into my imagination. And I try to expressed it by way of painting on canvas. The philosophy of this festival have been described accurately in some books by local authors and even by some cultural experts from foreign countries such as Dutch and the United States.
The same subject will be painted again in another perspective with different style.
