Description
Palace Of Fine Arts II.
The Palace Of Fine Arts is one of ten structures of this nature built for the 1915 Pan-American Exposition in San Francisco California. There were other structures built of a smaller stature that still survive but this is the largest surviving structure from the fair and it is the only one of two in their original location. The other being what is known as the Bill Graham Auditorium. This is located in the Marina District of the city only a few blocks up off the San Francisco Bay.
This building was not built to last as many years as it has as the plan was to level all of them after the fair. There was a change of heart and Palace Preservation League was founded while the fair was still in progress by Phoebe Hearst. The Palace was only intended to last the length of the exhibition, not really built to last.
In 1964 the building was completely demolished with only the steel structure of the hall still left standing. It was rebuilt with a lightweight poured in place concrete. In 2010 the dome was seismically retrofitted.
