Description
Taken in Lincoln Park, Kenosha Wisconsin, USA.
This bridge is a unique structure noted for its attractive Art Deco detailing. The bridge features curved concrete deck girders, a rare design. The center span is a rather long spanning example of this structure type, usually reserved for short spans. The graceful arched girders have wing details at the end and decorative aluminum strips in the concrete to form decorative lines. The bridge also features aluminum railing with concrete posts. The bridge was built to carry pedestrians over a park lagoon.
This bridge was designed by Charles S. Whitney. Whitney was a noted engineer in southeastern Wisconsin operating a firm in Milwaukee, and a number of unique concrete bridges were designed by him, this bridge being one such example. Whitney later got together with with famous bridge engineer Othmar H. Ammann (noted for the design of several large bridges in New York City), forming the firm Ammann & Whitney. Ammann & Whitney remains in business today and in 1989 they were also hired to rehabilitate this historic bridge that Whitney had designed so many years earlier.
