Description
Ancient Wrasse" chromolithograph by Philip Henry Gosse, from Gosse's "The Aquarium, an unveiling of the wonders of the deep sea" London Van Voorst 1854. Gosse coined the term'Aquarium" and was among the first to popularise it as a hobby. A highly respected naturalist and illustrator, he was pivotal to the establishment of the London Zoo's fish house in 1852, supplying the nucleus of their stock. Initially a supporter of Darwin, Gosse's torment between the revealed truth of the Bible and scientific knowledge caused him to publish his book "Omphalos" to explain how the earth, though created in seven days, appeared much older. The book was not well received even by churchmen and Gosse's reputation was damaged."
