Description
Fallopian tube. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of the lining of a fallopian tube (oviduct). The fallopian tubes carry the egg from the ovary to the uterus (womb). They are lined with a moist mucous membrane that contains two types of cells, secretory cells and ciliated cells. The secretory cells (dark green) secrete mucus, which protects the lining of the fallopian tubes. The ciliated cells are covered in microscopic hair-like structures known as cilia (light green and yellow). These beat in wave-like motions and function to move the egg along the fallopian tube.
