Description
Sancti Petri Island. Castle.
In the first century. C. his Geography Strabo relates that the Tyrians founded Gadeira, raising a shrine to Melkarth, primitive figuration of Hercules, in the eastern part of the island and city in the western part. It was said that the temple had been founded in the time of the Trojan War in the early twelfth century. C.
The sanctuary would probably be a set of buildings where there would be a main building and a courtyard which is accessed by a flanked by two large columns door. According to Silius Italicus narrates in the first century BC In the frontispiece appeared the twelve labors of Hercules carved in bronze. There was no image of the god inside the enclosure. It also refers to the fact that human sacrifices were prohibited because in her altar burned a perpetual fire, cared for by the unceasing vigilance of his priests. According to Strabo, in the columns of the entrance sailors made their sacrifices. Abounded in the sanctuary bronze altars with scenes from the life of Hercules where the fire burned. Besides the two wells were famous freshwater regime had grown to reverse the tides.
According to the Roman historian Pomponio Mela, under the temple were buried the remains of Hercules, hence its great reputation. It also contained relics as famous as the seat Teucer, son of Telamon Greek hero and Pygmalion tree whose fruits were said to emeralds. Histográficas Classical sources relate that many celebrated, illustrious by his exploits or his nobility, characters visited this temple. Livy tells Hannibal arrived on the island to offer to God their vows before undertaking the conquest of Italy. In this sanctuary, Julius Caesar had a dream that predicted world domination after crying before the bust of Alexander the Great, having fulfilled her age without having achieved a major success.
During Roman times persisted the splendor of the temple, which reached peak under Trajan. It began its decline in the fourth century to lose its former greatness completely during the Visigoths. The sanctuary came under attack and destruction, the action of the sea, their exploitation as oyster stone quarry and successive occupations over it have developed, so has disappeared. Its existence is stated by the Greek and Latin texts, from XVI century cited by historians and scholars, and important archaeological remains found since the early twentieth century, like the statue of a Roman emperor deified large in 1905, a statuette Bronze Fame running a chariot and a toracata bronze statue, found in Rompetimones in 1925. They are found in the Museum of Cadiz.
