Description
Purkinje neurons, light micrograph. These cells comprise a flask-shaped cell body (dark) from which numerous processes (dendrites) branch. It is through these dendrites that the cell receives impulses from other cells. Purkinje cells, which play a role in motor coordination, form the junction between the granular (lower left) and molecular (upper right) layers of the grey matter of the cerebellum. The brain's cerebellum controls balance, posture and muscle coordination. This sample, from a human brain, has been prepared with Cajal's staining. Magnification x200 when printed at 10 centimetres across.
