Description
Cervical cancer. Light micrograph of a cervical smear showing squamous (epidermoid) carcinoma. The cervix is the narrow passage that connects the uterus with the vagina. A clump of tumour cells is at centre. Tumour cells have large rounded nuclei with a prominent nucleolus (just visible as a black dot on some nuclei). They have abundant strongly stained cytoplasm (mauve). Squamous carcinoma of the cervix is a common tumour, occurring most often in women over the age of 40. Papanicolaou stained. Magnification x400 at 35mm size.
