Distortions of the Sun. 17th century diagram explaining how the disc of the Sun appears distorted when seen close to the horizon. This effect, attributed to differential refraction, was first noted and explained by Scheiner. This woodcut illustration comes from Disquisitiones mathematicae by Christoph Scheiner, published at Ingolstadt in 1614.
