Description
Isabel la Catolica square.
Square Isabella is an urban area located in the historical district of the Spanish city of Granada , right at the beginning of the Catholic Kings street , at the intersection with Gran Via and Pavaneras street , in front of the Bank of Santander, at the geographical coordinates 37 ° 10'32 .32 " N 3 ° 35'51 .02" O1
Dating from 1962 , it was built under Mayor Manuel Rodríguez- Sola Bolívar to increase circulatory permeability of the Gran Via and the San Matías . The work of this esplanade , was the demolition of the Gran Capitan Theatre , the Palace of the Luque and the old Post Office building . Also were demolished some houses that the son of Don Alvaro de Bazan , had commissioned the Genoese sculptor Nicolao of Court , following the destruction of the Dominican Convent of Sancti Spiritus , 2 dated 1520 , and in whose chapel was buried family of Bazanes.3
At the end of the square subsequently built the large building mirrors bank Santander. This block clearly breaks the historicist and eclectic aesthetic that dominates seudomodernista buildings of the Gran Vía To alleviate the architectural impact brought about by this financial building was brought from the Paseo del Salón bronze sculpture of Queen Isabella and Christopher Columbus sculptor Mariano Benlliure. The sculpture , made in Rome in 1892 , representing Isabella accepting propositions of Christopher Colón.4
