The Whitney Center for the Arts or the \"Whit\" in Pittsfield, MA will be displaying Edward Fielding\'s photography essay \"Family Tradition\" in March 2013.
Family Tradition is part of an ongoing series of images surrounding the maple sap crop in New England. The four black and white photographs to be shown at the Whitney Center document the Bowers family tradition of boiling maple sap into sweet syrup each winter.
This series came about when Fielding stopped to photograph the steaming sugar shack at the Bowens farm and was invited in to witness the process. The Hartland Four Corners, Vermont shack was build in 1954. Four generations of Bowers men involved in producing this authentic, natural, sweet liquid gold - pure Vermont Maple syrup.
The Whitney Center for the Arts was established by Pittsfield native Lisa Whitney in 2012, saving and creatively reusing the historic Colt House in Pittsfield's Upstreet Cultural District. Named in honor of her parents, the 'Whit' features changing art show, intimate theatre and music performances, and other special events, and has upstairs offices and studios for rent.
