Ripe Art Gallery is pleased to present “Then and Now” an exhibit by Maxine Jurow, which she calls “Abstractions over time......”. This show encompasses Jurow’s long career as a painter and affords the viewer a chance to see some of her early work, large scale paintings from the 70’s and 80’s, alongside some of her newest work, fresh from her studio and in some cases, barely dry. We invite you, on Saturday November 23, 2013, to experience our newly expanded gallery space at Rexer’s Crossroad Farm on Park Avenue, and attend an OPENING RECEPTION from 5-8pm. “Then and Now” by will be on display at Ripe Art Gallery until December 12, 2013.
Jurow is an intuitive painter, and has been working since the early 70’s, showing at galleries on Long Island, the Pleiades Gallery in New York City. and internationally. In 1984 she had a solo show at the Heckscher Museum of Art. She returned to a full time art career in 2008, after a ten year stint of teaching art and 20 years as executive director of Literacy Suffolk.
Jurow’s work has evolved over the years from color field painting, later incorporating geometrics, to her current work which is abstraction based on landscape. There have been many steps in between, but her work has always been about color. Her horizon lines range from high to low, sometimes with overlays of geometric shapes, blocks of color “running” across the painting, and drawing over her many layers of paint. She works on paper, canvas, board, and most recently, Mylar. Her work over the years has always remained committed to abstraction, and reconceptualizing the visual. aesthetic. and material boundaries of abstract painting.
