Leo Koo Gallery presents

JASMINE WALLACE

Opening: December 5, 7pm
Exhibition: December 3 – January 4

Characterized by the superimposition of geometric shapes in neutral hues over rich wooden grains, Jasmine Wallace explores the complexities of monochromatic abstraction in her upcoming self-titled exhibition at Leo Koo Gallery. While embracing minimalism’s focus on materials and means of assemblage, Wallace takes up a more nuanced approach to the unitary object by building sculptural works on canvas.

Between December 3rd and January 4th, the Vancouver artist will reveal her most recent work that embraces a quieter, more soft-spoken aesthetic. While continuing to focus on the poetic beauty of the mark in its immediacy, Wallace successfully draws on her love for the rich history of mark making to showcase new inspirations drawn from urbanization and modernist design. Tape serves as her pliant medium of choice, allowing her to construct and deconstruct form using the material’s own mutabilities and to mimicking the inconsistent everyday landscapes of urban Vancouver.

Jasmine Wallace is a sculptor and painter who, having grown up immersed in Vancouver Island’s artist community, embarked on an artistic practice through experimentations with materials that were readily available to her. In 2005, Wallace graduated from Nova Scotia College of Art and Design with a Major in Ceramics and a Minor in Drawing. During that time, she acted as an assistant to a large public sculptural project with Professor Neil Forrest at the Sculpture Symposium, International Ceramic Centre in Guldageraard, Denmark. Inspired by Denmark’s forward-thinking artistic culture, she completed a MFA with a Major in Ceramics and a Minor in Museum Studies at the University of Minnesota in 2010. Wallace’s intensive education within ceramics has afforded her the ability to think of painting through sculpture, and has inspired her to engage with her community by managing the local non-profit organization Just Potters. Wallace currently lives and works in Vancouver.
