grafitto own your walls

While the exhibition's title - grafitto: own your walls is a nod to Vancouver’s street art scene and the legacy of graffiti-artist turned studio-painter greats, it also points to the complication of exhibiting graffiti in a gallery setting. An artist’s signature style or artistic process may be revealed in his or her individual artworks.

Each piece, or singular graffito, can be seen as a concentrated sample of the immense amount of work and experimentation that preceded it. The strong outlines and cropped silhouettes of Nick Gregson’s tattoo and pop art inspired work, and the efficient, deliberate strokes in Chris Phillip’s expressionistic paintings are heavily invested in the repetition of the artist’s mark.
